Making weight for a fight is one of the hardest and loneliest things I’ve ever done.

You tell yourself that weigh-in day is weeks away, and that there’s ample time. And before you know it, you’re four weeks out from fight night with 6kg still to lose, and YOU KNOW you should have started well over a month ago.

But life has a habit of getting in the way: 

  • You’re on a job, and the customer brings you cake and biscuits with a mug of tea – ohhh go on then, where’s the harm in that? Just a few Jammie Dodgers.

  • You didn’t make time to do the weekly shop, and now you’re scratching around the cupboards, trying to put together a meal of bran flakes and canned peas.

And then the worry sets in – “I don’t know how I’m going to hit 73kg?”, “I always start strong, then plateau at 79kg and can never seem to get past it”, 

We ALL know healthy from unhealthy foods. We ALL know the things we should eat, and the things we should avoid like the plague. So, WHY is it so hard to make weight?

If your experience of making weight for a fight is anything like mine, you’ll know that things start off great, and then suddenly, the weight loss stops.

No rhyme or reason to it; just like that, the timber refuses to budge.

You walk around at 82kg, and your fighting weight is 73kg. You’ll start off with a plan and firing on all cylinders, cutting down quickly to 79kg. And then, you get stuck.

You think to yourself: I’m not eating fast food, and I’m not drinking. I’m not snacking on the sofa in the evening, AND I’m training my behind off. Why won’t the weight just drop?

I used to really grapple with making weight; it was always a last-minute dash – often involving hours in the sauna on weigh-in day, water-loading in the week running up to the big night, and generally putting myself through a miserable few days, just to feel exhausted and dehydrated stepping on to the scales.

But all this changed when I discovered certain key principles that changed my fight prep game forever.

As a result, I make weight early, which means I can flood my body with all the carbohydrates and fluids it needs to be ready for fight night.

It’s not just WHAT you eat or even HOW MUCH of it, but rather:

  • IN WHAT ORDER

  • AT WHAT TIME

and, perhaps most importantly,

  • IN WHAT COMBINATION
